The Family Literacy Program at Altura Elementary School is parent/child education program designed to help parents of school-aged children become more actively involved in their children's education in a traditional elementary school setting. The Learning Source approaches this by providing parents with educational instruction in reading, writing and speaking English in the schools their children attend. The four components of Family Literacy include: Children's Education, Adult Education, Parent Time, and Parent and Child Together Time. Parents help their children in their classroom weekly, and are guided to ensure they have the skills they will need to do classroom activities successfully. Through this approach, parents are better prepared and informed to promote their child's social, emotional and cognitive development during the formative years of their education.
